(At least one critic wasn’t kind about her rendition. The New York Daily News said that she “massacred” the song.)

But the more important point is this: when there’s a call for consciousness about an issue, people often call on Bob Marley. The 1940 movie “The Grapes of Wrath,” based on the classic John Steinbeck novel, features this quote, spoken by the character Tom Joad: “Wherever you can look – wherever there’s a fight, so hungry people can eat, I’ll be there. Wherever there’s a cop beatin’ up a guy, I’ll be there. I’ll be in the way guys yell when they’re mad. I’ll be in the way kids laugh when they’re hungry and they know supper’s ready, and when the people are eatin’ the stuff they raise and livin’ in the houses they build – I’ll be there, too.”

Marley is something like that. His music was too broad to define him as a protest singer, but whenever there’s a protest, or a demonstration, or a relief concert, his music tends to show up, and his spirit seems to be present. Reportedly, Marley’s music was heard when the Berlin Wall fell, and around the time of the Tiananmen Square uprising, and during the recent pro-immigration rallies in the U.S.

Protest songs can date quickly. If a singer focuses on a particular issue or concern, when that issue or concern has been solved, the song can become moot. I’ve always loved the Specials song “Nelson Mandela” with its refrain “free Nelson Mandela”, but now that Mr. Mandela is out of prison, and his country is free, the song must be enjoyed figuratively and not literally.

Of course, specificity doesn’t have to detract from a classic song’s greatness. I get the same charge out of listening to Bob Dylan’s “Hurricane” — a song about the wrongful imprisonment of boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter for murders many experts say he didn’t commit — that I did before Mr. Carter was released from jail.

Marley’s songs manage to be specific but somehow universal. He shoots the sheriff but not the deputy, and his lyrics sound personal and mythic at the same time. He urges you to get up, stand up — both a specific action and a sweeping statement that can be applied to any situation in which the powerful attempt to crush the powerless.

It’s also interesting that even Marley’s love songs could sound like protest anthems. The Marley song performed at “Live Earth” had no direct connection to protest, or global warming or environmentalism. But in Marley’s world, enjoying love, sharing shelter in a single bed, could be seen as a blow to the powers that be, the vampires that would suck the blood of the sufferers.

And because of the way Marley lived his life, all his songs are imbued with righteousness. Like old Tom Joad, if you’re facing troubles, and you look for him, his music will be there.
