Ada kecenderungan media versi online tidak lagi memakai kamera foto berukuran besar seperti digital SLR, atau perekam video sejenis handycam. Wartawan media online di lapangan lebih efektif bekerja dengan perangkat berukuran kecil, yang bisa dimasukkan ke dalam kantong baju.

Beberapa jenis HP kini sudah dilengkapi dengan kamera perekam foto dan video beresolusi 5 MP dan yang lebih tinggi, plus bisa sekaligus dipakai sebagai modem untuk tersambung ke Internet. Dengan sebuah PDA atau ponsel semutakhir Nokia N95 seperti dipakai kru Reuters versi online misalnya, liputan berita di pelosok Pulau Samosir bisa langsung disiarkan ke seluruh dunia hanya berselang beberapa menit setelah peristiwa terjadi; gambar berupa foto maupun video peristiwa itu bisa segera diunggah ke web oleh si wartawan, langsung dari lapangan tanpa harus menunggu kembali ke kantor. Handphone berkamera jugalah yang kini dipakai wartawan DetikTV di Jakarta.

Telepon genggam yang memiliki fasilitas perekam foto dan video, serta aplikasi web, memang sangat tepat dipakai oleh wartawan media online. Tapi kamera standar seperti kamera foto digital SLR maupun jenis poket, dan handycam, tetap lebih cocok untuk media konvensional, yaitu koran dan stasiun tivi, karena percetakan koran dan tayangan tivi membutuhkan gambar beresolusi tinggi.

What is in the Mobile Journalism Toolkit? First of all the phone. This is a Nokia N95 which now comes in three different versions.

The original European version that we used for most of the trial. Then there is a the US edition which adds more memory and support for US carrier frequencies. Finally there is the news 8GB version which can store much more music and videos, and for our journalists more raw materials.

The next part of the toolkit are the peripherals. A key component was the bluetooth keyboard that we used. This made it much easier to enter text-based stories in the field. For this we used the Nokia SU-8W. This folds up and has a bracket to hold the phone.

We also supplied a basic tripod to help in video interviews and a Sony microphone for directional audio recording and reducing background noise in interviews – this required a special adaptor plug that was made by Nokia for the project. Finally to deal with power issues we also used Power Monkeys, both basic and Explorer versions (see photo). The Explorer has a solar charging system which was particularly useful in Senegal.
